A hymn to sacred flame

 A hymn to sacred flame

Oh! Brilliant flame Oh! Radiant flame

Glory to thee and all your fame

We venerate you before the game

Pleading you to destroy our vain

Oh! Light of knowledge, Oh! Knowledge of light

Transmuting the halls of wisdom - bright

We Honor thee before our fight,

Impelling us to supreme flight

Oh! Mystic fire Oh! Sacred fire

Oblations for having sages, inspired

Meeting them through your spire

We travel through the quagmire

Oh! Wonder Patron of spirituous Math

Embracing thee and Thou gracious warmth

Through you - who the seers granteth

We, the children, experience life cometh

Notes

In this piece I’ve drawn from Indian sacred chants addressed to the effulgent flame. In Indian liturgy, the flame is venerated as that which leads civilization from darkness to light. The flame is also seen as the emissary of divine grace and a catalyst for spiritual growth. With India being one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the celebration of the sacred flame is a metaphorical thread that binds us to times past. Fire has played an important role in human life and still does. It is hence natural that we honour that which is powerful but also commonplace.
